I just read the article on the Sotomeyer nomination. Republican elected officials are in a froth because they want to oppose her but are afraid to because she's Hispanic and female. They fear opposing her may turn off future voters because they want to broaden their base.

- National City Bank charges you $15 to use your own money from your savings when you accidentally overdraft. That's a transaction that costs them nothing. It's the dirtiest swindle ever - it's like loaning you your own money and charging a hefty fee for it.

- Dude, there is an enormous difference in putting a monitoring device on a person convicted of a crime, and an ordinary citizen. Yes, everything has the potential for abuse.

- I agree. The analogy is absurd. The woman in the story was happy with the choice of an ankle bracelet versus jail. Who wouldn't be? This doesn't seem big brotherish at all to me. When you're in jail you are monitored almost constantly, and you certainly aren't allowed any alcohol.

- Of course recycling uses energy - it just uses a whole lot less than manufacturing from new materials, and it saves resources. New materials have to be sourced, transported, manufactured and distributed too.

- Well, that's where you're wrong. Corporations are not of and by the people. I am not a corporation, even when I worked for one. A corporation is the exact opposite - it's a non-human entity, and designed as such to protect those who run it.

- You are so off base it's not even funny. I'm a liberal and I make plenty of money. Conserving resources has less to do with money than it has to do with the good of mankind. I can afford $4 per gallon gas, but that's not where I want my money to go.
